The red imported fire ant was recorded in parts of Oklahoma as early as 1985, but was probably present in the state before that time. It has been found at one time or another in at least 40 Oklahoma counties. Twenty counties in Oklahoma now come under federal quarantine, with special requirements for the shipment of certain goods out of those counties. Be prepared to collect a small sample of the ants to send in to OSU for positive identification. You can aid Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry in tracking fire ant infestations in Oklahoma. By doing so, you will help us to direct research and education efforts where they are needed most.
